About

Eight decades as the voice of West Virginia.

Founded in 1940 as West Virginia Radio Corporation. Family-owned, based in Morgantown, and still committed to staying local.

It began with WAJR.

West Virginia Radio Corporation was founded in 1940 by Agnes and Herbert Greer, who already owned the Dominion Post and the Greer Limestone Company when they launched WAJR-AM in Morgantown. The call letters were the maiden initials of Mrs. Greer, Agnes Jane Reeves. In 1948 WAJR-FM signed on as the first FM station in West Virginia and one of the first commercial FM stations licensed in the United States.

After Mr. Greer’s death, Mrs. Greer ran the companies for more than twenty years. On her death in 1972, ownership passed to her three grandsons, Richard, John and David Raese.

In 1985 the firm launched the MetroNews Radio Network, a statewide news, information and sports network distributed by satellite. As the media needs of the state changed, the company kept pace: an Emmy award winning video division, a digital marketing team and, today, WVRC Media as the name over the door.

The mission has not changed. We exist to serve the communities, citizens, charities and businesses who call West Virginia home. We’re proud to live here too.
